FACT: Buy a DIY conservatory glazed with standard double glazing and you will lose valueable heat in the colder months leading to higher fuel costs.
Conservatories at present are not covered by Part L of the Building Regulations which specify that any replacement windows and doors installed in your house must be fitted with Low E glass to reflect heat back into the room and improve insulation values, referred to as ‘u’ values. The most common brand of Low E glass in the UK is Pilkington K glass.
Since there is currently no enforced standard for conservatory glass most conservatory suppliers still provide cheaper standard air filled glass sealed units that do not incorporate any type of heat reflecting glass. You should think carefully before accepting such a low specification sealed unit specification for your new conservatory.
The price may be tempting now but any savings you make in the cost of the conservatory now are likely to be offset by the increase in your heating costs for your new conservatory during the colder months of the year.
Move to higher European standards now with Triple Shield
European standards of insulation are much higher than the UK for sealed unit double glazing and you can now have the European standard of double glazing in the PVCu frames of your new DIY Conservatory and as an option, also in your conservatory roof.
Instead of just K glass which meets current UK standards of insulation all our self build conservatories are supplied with Argon Gas filled Triple Shield performance double glazing as standard. Triple Shield is manufactured using a European glass with a higher level of insulation than K glass and which does not have the impaired vision or tint that is often associated with K glass.
Triple Shield double glazing is manufactured using soft coated Low E glass which not only has a much improved ‘u’ value over K glass but also offers higher light transmission and a lower solar gain or in other words, helps keep the heat in during the winter and helps to keep solar heat out in the summer.
Triple Shield double glazing is 60% more efficient than K glass and and an incredible 140% more efficient than standard air filled sealed units.
A conservatory featuring standard air filled sealed units may appear to be a bargain now but your heating costs in the winter will be substantially increased due to the poor insulation value of the glass product. Our Triple Shield double glazing will save you money by reflecting heat back into the conservatory.
The surface temperature of the glass is much higher than standard double glazing so furniture can be placed closer to the glass area without discomfort in the winter which is especially important in conservatories where furniture is almost always closer to the glass area.
As can be seen from the chart above Triple Shield double glazing acheives higher light transmission, lower solar gain and a much lower U value when compared to K glass.
Please visit our Insulation Values page for important facts that you need to consider to ensure that your conservatory will be a year round extension to your home. Choosing a lesser specification product could mean that you are unable to sit in the conservatory on hot summer days and you could find it expensive to keep it warm in the winter.
